You can keep your house and your rules. I’m keeping my guitar.

Tell Mum I love her. And tell Penelope I’m not running from her.

Chris

CHAPTER 16

The pressure started shortly after their wedding. When the baby arrived three years later, it increased. It was not her fault. She had lived a life of neither want nor worry. Naturally, she wanted to raise their son in the same manner.

“You did promise, Jameson,” Sarah had reminded him, the day they brought Bobby home. “I’ve tried not to keep after you. I know how hard you work, my darling. I really do. But with three mouths to feed…well, it’s something we need to consider.”

On a good month, he earned roughly £100. With taxes, food, rent, and various essentials, it did not go far. Sarah was right, as usual. He had promised to take care of her. In fact, he had used every bit of the money he had tried to save to that very end. Now, not a shilling remained.

And so, he worked. Harder. Longer. Weekends. Evenings. Special events. He worked until Sarah grew lonely from his time away. Yet, for all his effort, the sacrifice netted little difference.

“Have you considered a change of profession?” Sarah would ask every so often, as they cuddled the baby at night while enjoying their favorite radio shows.

The answer never varied. “Other than the coal mines and a bit of time working the docks, I’ve never trained for any other profession. I’ve little formal education.”

“No one who spends five minutes with you would believe that. You’re so well read. I’m certain you could find an apprenticeship and work your way up.”

“Perhaps. But I’m a bit old to be starting over. The time I’d spend on the lower rungs of such ladders would ensure we remain in our precarious condition. What help is that to us now?”

She could have pushed harder than she did. They both knew it. But they had entered their union with eyes open. Jameson was a blue-collar worker. Sarah’s family disapproved of him and had effectively disowned her over their marriage.

Night after sleepless night, Jameson plotted ways to better their circumstances. Sarah had turned him into a more refined version of the man he once was. Had it only mattered for the time it took to meet—and immediately suffer rejection by—her family? What future could a new name promise his family? Or was it for naught? Who was he, really: Jameson Lockhardt or Ronald Nock?

The obvious solution tormented his inner thoughts, daring him to take the risk. It was so simple. And the improvement would happen overnight. However, he did not fool himself. The life he had abandoned was a gamble in the best of times.

“Perhaps we should start attending church,” Sarah had suggested more than once. “I used to go as a child. We could pray. Get Bobby baptized. Maybe God’s trying to tell us something.”

The last thing Jameson wanted to do was alienate the wife he loved by confessing his fervent disbelief in a Supreme Being.
